Which form for which application?
Two things decide it: the size of the molecule you need to hold, and the flow regime. Large molecules — colour bodies, humic acids — are held in mesopores; small molecules and chlorine in micropores. Where flow is fast, pressure drop matters; where contact time is short, surface area does.
Granular activated carbon (0–10 mm) suits fixed-bed columns: water treatment, gas treatment and cat litter — continuous flow with low pressure drop. It can be backwashed and regenerated.
Powdered activated carbon (<150 µm) is dosed straight into the liquid: sugar refining, food and edible oil bleaching, cosmetics. Its very high contact area works fast, and it is separated afterwards by filtration.
Every application uses the same feedstock: 100% hazelnut shell, iodine number 1000 mg/g, methylene blue >250 mg/g. What those numbers mean is on the iodine number page; how the pore structure forms is on what is activated carbon.
